Reaping the rewards
We aren’t the first to cherish this place and its fruit-bearing qualities. The pinot noir, pinot gris and riesling grapes for Caldera’s premium wines are the rewards of vines planted on the estate by the original visionaries of the nineties and matured over decades.
A tragic past and a change of circumstance meant that by the time the new owner Tony Anderson took charge of the vineyard it had fallen into a state of disrepair.
Unperturbed, the experienced winegrowing team headed by Caldera’s energetic new owner worked hard to restore the land and repair the vines, salvaging and nurturing those with potential and replacing where required.
The estate’s day-long sunlight and fertile volcanic soils provide ideal winegrowing conditions. Under the expert care of our celebrated winemakers and continuing the long-held practice of growing without irrigation, Caldera’s vines have successfully produced low-yield fruit of the highest quality for our premium varietals. The efforts are being rewarded.
